obv.- FL VA CONSTANTIVS NB C; laureate draped and cuirassed bust right
rev.- GENIO POPVLI ROMANI; Genius standing left, holding patera and cornucopia; C | Γ in field, TR in ex
RIC VI Tr 195 [var]
27.6mm; 7.4g; nummus
Absolutely unique obverse legend is completely unknown—it is not catalogued anywhere, for any mint or issue. All of the laur/cuir bust types for this issue are rated R or S for rarity, and none of those include the FL VAL first/second names. Based on the distinctive and somewhat crude portrait style, this is probably a "barbarous" issue, struck by an unofficial mint in Gaul or Germany. 104-846

Carthage, 297
obv.- CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES; Laureate bust of Constantius to right
rev.- FELIX ADVENT AVGG NN; Africa standing to left in elephant headdress, holding standard and tusk, lion with captured bull at feet, mintmark PKT in exergue, officina 'Γ' in left field
RIC VI Car 22a
28mm; 9.3g; nummus
The mint of Carthage did not predate the Tetrarchy, and its opening is in fact considered related to the arrival of emperor Maximian there to supress an African revolt, along with the funding issues associated with that campaign. The reverse legend (FELIX ADVENT AVGG NN) is unique to this mint, as well as its device with a distinctly local flavor - the personification of Africa, with many of her special attributes (somewhat reminiscent of the Hadrian travel series). Also interesting here is the officina denotation, as the Greek 'Γ' from the field just doubles the Latin "T" from the exergue.

Carthage, 298-299
obv.- CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES; laur bust right
rev.- SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS AVCTA KART; Carthage standing, holding fruits in both hands; Γ in ex
RIC VI Car 28a
25mm; 9.1g; nummus
"SALVIS … AVCTA KART" ("blessed Carthage") was only used as the reverse legend for a single issue (the first), after which it was replaced by "SALVIS … FEL KART" ("happy Carthage"), which wound up being used for all future issues of this type. This variety is rated S in RIC.

RIC VI Ant 55a
28mm; 10.2g; nummus
The K-V in the fields signify the coin's value. K is the Greek numeral for 20, denoting the coin's value as 20 sestertii; V indicates the value as 5 denarii. This issue corresponds to the "Moneta" issues from other mints, that were issued in response to Diocletian's monetary and price reforms of 300/301. (The other letter, A, is the mint officina mark, similar to the mint marks commonly used on other coins of this era.)

The club is used as a mint-control mark, but also symbolizes Hercules, since Constantius (and Maximianus) were supposed to be from the House of Hercules—contrast with the lightning bolt that symbolized Jupiter, used for Galerius and Diocletian.

[biographical notes go here...] Originally from Dacia Ripensis. Son of a goat-herd and freeedman's daughter. Plain soldier > officer > distinguished military career. Was governor of Dalmatia when Diocletian became emperor; supported Diocletian, one of his early supporters, in fact. Praetorian prefect and deputy (caesar) of Maximianus. Reproted to be generous and kind, and concerned about culture/philosophy, despite hsi own lack of education. Apparently interested in monotheisml; daughter's name of Anastasia might suggest Christian sympathies, either for Constantius, Theodora, or both. Might or might now have been married to Helena, Cosntantine's mother, a non-Roman "stabularia" or tavern-lady/barmaid. Reported;y a Christian? Ditched for marriage to Theodora (Flavia Maximiana Theodora), stepdaughter of Maximianus (and... who? Clear up relationship with her and Maxentius.) Six children with Theodora plus one with Helena -- these six were suppressed by Constantine, but the next generation, Constantius' grandkids, were their own mini-dynasty. Appointed caesar in 293, with capital in Treveri. As Augustus, campaigns against Picts in Scotland. Joined by son Constantine following Diocletian's abdication and rise of Galerius.
