Maximinus II nummus —$70
—struck by Galerius

RIC VI Thes 39a
27mm; 7.4g; nummus
Coins of Maximinus with this reverse are fairly common; coins of Maximinus struck during the short period in which he was titled "filius augustorum" are relatively uncommon; but coins with this reverse type, AND struck as filius augustorum, are very scarce indeed. Almost every coin you see—from either Constantine or Maximinus—struck with the FIL AVG legend has a "Genius" reverse type. This is the only time I've come across this type, apart from the other example in my collection. There is a noticeable scratch on the face, that looks like it was done in antiquity because it is patinated over. Perhaps this is a "damnatio" mark; many coins of Maximinus from this era were deliberately defaced by Christians, who were suffering greatly from the persecutions of Maximinus and Galerius that were being carried out at the time this coin was minted, and Thessalonica at this time was one of the most important Christian communities in the empire. 104-864

RIC VI Lug 255
27mm; 6.5g; nummus
This is a nice example of a full-size nummus from early in Constantine's reign. This was one of the very first coins struck in his name as Augustus. At this time, Constantine's title of Augustus was only recognized in Gaul and Britain, and in the territories controlled by Maxentius; he had yet to be recognized as such by Galerius in the east. Detailed portrait in fine style. Semi-uncleaned, with a dusty green patina and original soil remaining, especially on the reverse. Minor scrape on Constantine's cheek—visible or not, depending on the lighting, but noted for accuracy. 104-946
